Beyond the Postcards:
What to Actually Do in Skardu

Skardu photos all look the same — turquoise lake, snowy peak, wooden boat. Great for a feed, less useful for planning an actual trip. Here's what's worth building your itinerary around.

Shigar Fort

A restored 17th-century fort turned heritage hotel and museum, Shigar Fort sits about an hour outside Skardu town in the Shigar Valley. Even if you're not staying the night, it's worth the drive — the wood-and-stone architecture, the surrounding orchards, and the small museum inside give a much better sense of the region's history than any lake view will.

Upper Kachura Lake (Shangrila)

Lower Kachura Lake, better known as Shangrila, is the one every visitor hits. Upper Kachura, a short drive further, gets a fraction of the footfall and arguably has the better view — a deep, still lake ringed by mountains, with none of the resort crowd.

Khaplu Valley

Often skipped in favor of Skardu town itself, Khaplu is roughly two and a half hours away and worth the detour. Khaplu Palace (Yabgo Khar), another restored royal residence, anchors a valley that feels noticeably quieter and less touristed than Skardu proper — a good stop if you want a slower day away from the main circuit.

The Road to Deosai

Even a half-day out toward the Deosai Plains — without necessarily driving the whole plateau — delivers some of the most dramatic scenery in the region: switchback roads, sudden shifts in landscape, and views back down into the Skardu valley that most day-trippers never see.

Sadpara Lake at Sunset

Closer to town and easy to fit into a short evening, Sadpara Lake is a smaller, quieter alternative to the bigger lakes — best visited late in the day, when the light hits the surrounding hills and the crowds have already left.

The Bottom Line

Skardu rewards travelers who go past the two or three spots everyone tags on Instagram. Budget at least three full days if you want to actually see the valley rather than just the highlight reel — and with Lokal as your base, all of these are an easy day trip away.

Experience the many wonders of Skardu from the comfort of a LOKAL room in the valley with easy access to all these touristic offerings and many more. Keeping comfort and affordability in check, get a room with spectacular views and enjoy a wonderful autumn getaway. Book your stay in Skardu now at lokal.pk.
