Often called the "Land of Giants," Deosai Plains is one of the highest plateaus in the world and one of the most memorable day trips you can take from Skardu. Here's what to actually know before heading up.

Deosai is only accessible for part of the year — this is the single most important thing to plan around.

• Open roughly: late May/June through September, depending on snowfall that year
• Closed the rest of the year: heavy snow makes the plateau inaccessible in winter and early spring
• Best window: July and August, when the plains are fully green and wildflowers are in bloom, though this is also peak crowd season

• Distance from Skardu: roughly 2–3 hours by jeep, depending on the route and road conditions
• Vehicle: a 4x4 jeep is strongly recommended — the terrain is rough in sections and not suitable for regular cars
• Route: most visitors go via Skardu towards Sadpara, continuing up onto the plateau

• Sheosar Lake — the plateau's centerpiece, a still, high-altitude lake often called one of the most beautiful in Pakistan
• Wide open plains — flat, grassy expanses stretching to the horizon, framed by distant peaks — genuinely unlike anywhere else in the region
• Wildlife — Deosai is a protected national park, known for the Himalayan brown bear, along with marmots and various bird species. Sightings aren't guaranteed, but early morning or evening improves your odds
• Cold weather even in summer — despite green plains and sunshine, temperatures drop fast, especially with any wind. Bring a warm layer regardless of the season down in Skardu

• Start early — most day trips leave Skardu in the early morning to make the most of daylight and calmer weather before afternoon clouds roll in
• Altitude matters — Deosai sits well above Skardu itself; take it easy if you notice shortness of breath, and stay hydrated

If your schedule and the season allow it, yes — Deosai is a genuinely different landscape from anything else around Skardu, and the scale of it (open plains meeting distant snow peaks) is hard to capture unless you've stood there. It's best added as a full-day trip rather than squeezed in alongside other stops, given the travel time each way.
