Murree Without the Crowds:
Why Autumn Works
Most people know two versions of Murree: summer, when half of Punjab drives up to escape the heat, and snow season, when traffic backs up for hours. Autumn sits quietly in between, and it's the version of Murree most visitors never see.
The Air Clears
After the monsoon, the haze lifts. October and November bring some of the clearest days of the year in the hills, which means long views across the ridges from Kashmir Point and Pindi Point instead of a wall of cloud. Mornings are crisp, afternoons are pleasant, and evenings call for a shawl and chai.
Mall Road, Minus the Shoving
On a summer weekend, Mall Road is a slow-moving crowd. In autumn, especially midweek, you can walk it end to end, stop at the old Christ Church, and find a table without waiting. It's the Murree people's parents remember.
Walks Worth Doing
Autumn is the best walking weather Murree gets. Take the road out toward Kashmir Point for the pine forest and the views, or head a short drive out to Patriata for the chairlift and cable car, which run with far shorter queues than in peak season.
What to Pack
Temperatures drop quickly after sunset, and by November nights get properly cold. Bring a warm jacket, closed shoes for the slopes, and a layer for the car ride up, as the weather on the Expressway and in the hills can feel like two different seasons.
Getting There
Murree is roughly an hour's drive from Islamabad via the Murree Expressway. With lighter traffic in autumn, it's an easy weekend trip from Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and a reasonable add-on for anyone flying into the capital from Karachi or Lahore.
The Bottom Line
If you've only seen Murree in July or January, you haven't really seen it. Go in October or November for clear views, cool weather and room to breathe, before the snow crowds arrive in December.
