5-Day Skardu Itinerary
for First-Timers

Skardu has enough to fill weeks, but if you've got five days, here's a realistic plan that balances the big must-sees with enough time to actually enjoy them - not just tick them off a checklist!

Day 1: Arrival & Settling In

Arrive by flight or after your overland drive via the Karakoram Highway.

Check in, rest, and ease into the altitude and change of pace.

Evening: a relaxed walk around Skardu Bazaar - good for a first taste of local food, dry fruits (apricots are a must try!), and handicrafts.

If you're staying with us, this is also a good evening to book your Katpana Cold Desert experience for the next day or later in your trip.

Day 2: Katpana Cold Desert

Spend the morning or afternoon at the Katpana Cold Desert - one of the highest cold deserts in the world, right at Lokal Kaptana.

Try the ATV ride, buggy ride, or horse riding, and stick around for a picnic on the dunes with the mountains as your backdrop.

This is one of the most unique experiences in Skardu and genuinely different from anything else on this list - snow-capped peaks framing sand dunes is not something you'll see in many places on earth.

Evening: relax back at the property, or catch sunset views nearby.

Day 3: Lakes Day - Shangrila & Upper Kachura

Morning: visit Shangrila (Lower Kachura Lake) - Skardu's most iconic spot, great for photos and a relaxed walk by the water.

Afternoon: head to Upper Kachura Lake, a quieter, less crowded alternative nearby - good for a calmer boat ride and better light for photos in the late afternoon.

Evening: return to Skardu town for dinner.

Day 4: Skardu Fort & Satpara Lake

Morning: climb up to Kharpocho Fort (Skardu Fort) for panoramic views over the Indus River and town - go a little earlier in the day to avoid the midday heat on the climb.

Afternoon: drive to Satpara Lake, known for its glacier-fed turquoise water - a good spot for a short boat ride and photos.

Evening: sunset at the fort is also a strong option if you'd rather do it later in the day instead of morning - either way, aim to catch the light over the valley.

Day 5: Shigar Valley Day Trip (or Rest & Departure)

If you have the energy, a day trip to Shigar Valley is a worthwhile detour - home to Shigar Fort and a quieter, more traditional side of Baltistan.

If you'd rather take it slower before departure, use this day to revisit a favorite spot from earlier in the trip, do some last-minute shopping in the bazaar, or simply enjoy the garden/property before heading back.

Depart via flight or the KKH route, depending on your original plan.

Tips for Making This Itinerary Work

Don't over-pack the days - distances between spots can take longer than expected due to road conditions, so this itinerary intentionally leaves room to breathe.

Book the desert experience in advance if you're visiting in peak season (May–September), as it's popular and slots fill up.

Check road/weather conditions each morning, especially for Shigar or Deosai-adjacent plans, since these can shift day to day.

Extend to 7 days if you also want to include Deosai Plains or Hushe Valley - both are worth it but need a full extra day each given travel time.

This itinerary is built around a first-time visit, but honestly, most people who do Skardu once end up wanting to come back — there's always another lake, valley, or season you haven't seen yet.

Staying at Lokal Kaptana? We're happy to help sequence your days based on your dates, weather, and what you're most excited to see - including booking your desert ATV, buggy, or horse riding experience in advance. Reach out on WhatsApp or check our rooms and availability.
