Skardu gets crowded in July. By September, the crowds thin out, the light gets better, and the valley starts putting on a show that most travelers miss entirely.

Skardu's valleys - Shigar, Khaplu, and the villages around the main town - are lined with apple, apricot, and walnut orchards, and September is harvest season. Roadside stalls sell fruit picked that morning, and the orchards themselves turn a warm, sun-soaked gold that's very different from the green you'd see in peak summer.

Skardu's famous rows of poplar trees, planted along fields and roadways throughout the valley, begin their shift to yellow in late September. Paired with the still-visible snow on the higher peaks and the turquoise of Upper Kachura and Lower Kachura lakes, it's arguably the most photogenic stretch of the year - and far less crowded than a summer weekend.

The Deosai Plains, one of the highest plateaus in the world, typically close for the season by early October due to snowfall. That gives you a narrow but real window in September to catch it before the road shuts down - still green in patches, with the wildflowers gone but the vastness of the plateau fully intact and the crowds long gone.

Summer in Skardu means haze and heat by midday. September brings crisp mornings, clear skies, and comfortable afternoons - better conditions for photography, for the drive out to Shigar Fort, and for evenings by the river without needing to hide from the sun.

Fewer tourists means easier hotel bookings, more relaxed pricing, and a much better shot at getting a table at Skardu's small handful of good restaurants without a wait.
